AI Engine is a WordPress plugin that lets AI agents run your site. Its free MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code more than 140 tools to create and edit posts, upload media, change SEO fields and update WooCommerce products, with each action tied to the user who connected. It also adds visitor chatbots, AI writing and image generation. The plugin has more than 90,000 active installations and a 4.9 out of 5 rating from 874 WordPress.org reviews.
It fits site owners, freelancers and agencies that already use Claude or ChatGPT and want those tools working inside WordPress. The free version covers the MCP server, and Pro starts at $59 a year. The main cost to plan for is your own AI provider usage for chatbots and writing. AI Engine scores 9.2/10 on our scale.

AI Engine by the Numbers
AI Engine is built by one developer, Jordy Meow, and its growth shows in the plugin directory. These figures come from Meow Apps and WordPress.org.
| Fact | Detail | Source and Date |
|---|---|---|
| First code | December 20, 2022; on WordPress.org a week later | Meow Apps AI Engine page |
| Releases | More than 500 versions shipped | Meow Apps AI Engine page |
| Active installs | 90,000+ | WordPress.org plugin page, November 2026 |
| WordPress.org rating | 4.9 out of 5 from 874 reviews | WordPress.org plugin page, November 2026 |
| MCP tools | 140+, or 200+ with the Meow Apps plugin family | WordPress.org plugin page, November 2026 |
| Latest release | 3.9.0 on November 2, 2026, adding MCP undo and approval controls | WordPress.org changelog |
| Entry Pro price | $59 a year for one site | AI Engine Pro page |
| Largest lifetime license | $799 for 2,500 sites | AI Engine Pro page |
| Requirements | WordPress 6.0+, PHP 8.1+ | Meow Apps AI Engine page |
The rating stands on a large base. Only seven reviews give one star. Of 874 reviews, 841 give five stars, a clear signal for a plugin that changes as often as this one.
The release pace cuts both ways. Four releases in the last two weeks of October 2026 added features such as an MCP activity tab, read-only connections and undo, and also fixed security issues. Site owners should keep automatic updates on.
How AI Engine Connects Agents to WordPress
AI Engine has two jobs. It runs an MCP server so outside agents can manage the site, and it adds AI features for visitors and editors inside WordPress.
Installing and Choosing a Provider
Install the plugin from WordPress.org. For chatbots and writing tools, add an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Perplexity or OpenRouter, or point it at a local model. You can switch providers at any time. The MCP server itself needs no API key.
Connecting Claude or ChatGPT
Claude and ChatGPT connect through OAuth, and Claude Code connects with a bearer token, which its commands mask. Each user connects with their own WordPress account, so actions are attributed to that person and limited to their role. Editors can connect only when Editor Access is turned on, and then only to content they can already edit. Connections run straight from the AI app to the site, or through an optional Meow Apps gateway that, the developer says, does not store requests.
What the Agent Can Change
The free MCP tools cover posts and pages, media, comments, users, menus, SEO fields, ACF fields, WooCommerce and page builders. Version 3.9.0 added block-by-block editing of Gutenberg posts. Pro adds tools for plugins, themes, the database and translations. Other Meow Apps plugins, such as SEO Engine, Media Cleaner and Media File Renamer, register their own tools.
Approvals, Undo and Activity
New sites ask for approval before deletions, or before all changes, depending on the setting. Every change can be undone, and history is kept for 30 days. An MCP activity tab shows what agents did, and read-only connections let an agent look without editing. The plugin excludes arbitrary PHP execution; a separate add-on for development provides it.
Chatbots and Writing Tools
Visitor chatbots answer questions from your content. Pro adds embeddings and knowledge bases, cross-site chatbots, a realtime voice chatbot, AI forms and function calling. Editors get AI writing, image generation and a copilot in the block editor, and the Workspace mobile apps let you manage the site from a phone without storing an API key on the device.
Privacy and Data Flow
Meow Apps describes the data flow plainly. The free version sends no data to Meow Apps. The Pro update check reports only whether MCP was used in the last 30 days, as a yes or no, and how many phones are paired with Workspace, as a count. AI requests go to the providers you set up, with your own keys. IP addresses are hashed, and GDPR tools are included.
A Sample Week for a Content Site
A food blogger with 600 recipes connects Claude through OAuth. On Monday, she asks Claude to find recipes missing SEO descriptions and write them; Claude proposes 40 changes, and she approves them. On Tuesday, she asks for alt text on images without it. On Wednesday, Claude drafts a new post from her notes, block by block, and saves it as a draft. On Friday, she spots a description she dislikes and undoes it from the history. Her visitor chatbot, trained on her recipes, answers substitution questions all week.
AI Engine Licenses and Provider Costs
AI Engine has a free version and Pro licenses sold yearly or once for life. AI provider usage is separate.
| License | Price | Billing | What Is Included | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | None | MCP server, chatbots, content and image generation, copilot, Workspace, REST API | No Pro MCP tools, forms or embeddings |
| Pro Starter | $59 | Yearly | All Pro features and updates | 1 site |
| Pro Standard | $79 | Yearly | All Pro features and updates | 5 sites |
| Pro Professional | $149 | Yearly | All Pro features and updates | 20 sites |
| Lifetime | $299 to $799 | One-time | Updates forever | From 1 to 5 sites up to 2,500 sites |
Lifetime tiers include Professional at $449 for 20 sites, Developer at $599 for 500 sites and Agency at $799 for 2,500 sites. Yearly licenses renew each year and can be cancelled at any time, and refunds are available on request within 14 days. Chatbots and writing tools bill through your own provider key. The MCP server uses your existing Claude or ChatGPT plan.
AI Engine Costs for Three Buyers
A blogger with one site can start free, since the MCP server is in the free version. Pro Starter at $59 a year adds advanced MCP tools, forms and embeddings. Provider costs for any chatbot come on top.
A freelancer with five client sites pays $79 a year on Pro Standard, or about $15.80 per site. An agency with 20 sites pays $149 a year on Pro Professional, about $7.45 per site, or $449 once for a lifetime license. The lifetime option equals about three years of yearly payments.
An agency with 300 sites can buy the Developer lifetime license at $599, which covers up to 500 sites, or about $2 per site at 300 sites, paid once.
Yearly Versus Lifetime for Agencies
The lifetime Professional license at $449 covers the same 20 sites as the $149 yearly license. It pays for itself in just over three years. Agencies that expect to keep WordPress clients for longer, and want one fewer renewal to track, may prefer it. Agencies still testing the plugin should start yearly and use the 14-day refund window if it does not fit.
AI Engine Compared With Angie, 10Web and Alli AI
These tools all let AI work on websites, but they take different routes into WordPress.
| Agent | Starting Price | Free Plan | Main Strength | Main Limit | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Engine | Free; Pro from $59/year | Yes | MCP server lets your own Claude or ChatGPT manage the site | Provider keys and setup steps | Owners and agencies already using AI assistants |
| Angie | Free (daily credits) | Yes | Builds widgets, snippets and pages in a sandbox | Credit limits on heavy use | Agencies building custom features |
| 10Web | $120 a year for one site | No (3-day trial) | Ten agents build and maintain hosted sites | Requires 10Web hosting | Businesses wanting new managed sites |
| Alli AI | $299 per month (reported) | No | Pushes SEO fixes across many sites by snippet | Higher entry price | SEO agencies managing many sites |
AI Engine is the most open of the four: it brings your existing AI assistant into WordPress. Angie builds new components with Elementor’s own AI, 10Web builds whole hosted sites, and Alli AI focuses on SEO changes across sites. More options are on our WordPress agents and content writing agents pages.
Cost structures differ widely. AI Engine charges a small license fee and leaves AI usage to your own plan or key. Angie and 10Web bundle AI credits, and Alli AI charges a monthly subscription. A team that already pays for Claude or ChatGPT may find AI Engine the cheapest way to put agents to work on WordPress.
WordPress Owners Who Fit AI Engine
Content-heavy sites fit well. Bloggers, publishers and stores with hundreds of posts or products can have an agent fill SEO fields, write alt text and update listings in bulk, with approval and undo as a safety net.
Agencies that already use Claude or ChatGPT can connect them to client sites, with each staff member signing in under their own WordPress account. Lifetime licenses suit agencies with many sites.
Sites that want a chatbot trained on their own content also fit, with the choice of provider and, on Pro, a voice chatbot and knowledge bases.
Developers using Claude Code on WordPress projects fit as well. The bearer-token connection lets Claude Code read and change content while a developer works on code, and read-only connections suit agents that only need to report on a site.
Sites That May Need a Different Approach
Owners who do not want to manage AI keys or connect an assistant may prefer a managed builder such as 10Web. Agencies that want an agent to design and code new components inside Elementor may prefer Angie.
Teams that need a large vendor’s support contract may want to weigh that AI Engine is maintained by a single developer, though its release history and ratings are good.
Permissions, Provider Bills and Updates for AI Engine
Keep approvals on for live sites. Approval before deletions, or all changes, is the default for new sites. Leave it on until you trust how your agent behaves.
Set roles with care. Agents act with the permissions of the connected WordPress user. Connect agents with an Editor account where possible, and turn on Editor Access only when needed.
Watch provider bills. Chatbots and writing tools use your own API keys, so a busy chatbot can raise your OpenAI or Anthropic bill. Pro includes usage insights and limits to cap spending.
Update promptly. Recent releases fixed security issues for Shop Managers, Editors on MCP, voice chatbots and cross-site requests. Keep automatic updates on.
Use the activity tab. Review what agents changed each week, and use read-only connections for agents that only need to report.
AI Engine Release Notes From Late 2026
The WordPress.org changelog lists four releases in late October and early November 2026. Version 3.8.7 on October 23 fixed security issues and added read-only MCP connections. Version 3.8.8 on October 27 fixed more security issues and added an MCP activity tab and settings backups. Version 3.8.9 on October 30 added a Restore link and direct or relay connection choices. Version 3.9.0 on November 2 added MCP undo and approval controls, block-by-block Gutenberg editing and support for several SEO plugins and ACF.
Our Read on AI Engine for WordPress Agents
