For $4 a month, a parent can switch on Khanmigo for up to 10 children. The AI tutor from the nonprofit Khan Academy started as a pilot in March 2023 on OpenAI’s GPT-4, and it is free for verified teachers. It is built to coach students toward an answer with hints and questions rather than give the answer away.

How It Works

Khanmigo sits inside Khan Academy’s exercises, videos and articles, so a student stuck on a problem can ask for help in context. It covers math, science, coding, history and other humanities, and offers guided writing and debate practice, coding feedback and college admissions coaching. Younger children can talk to it and hear replies through speech-to-text and text-to-speech.

For the 2026 to 2027 school year, Khanmigo can decide when a picture would help in math and science and generate an interactive diagram with Google’s Gemini models. Students can drag a point or a line and the tutor responds to the change. Teachers get lesson planning, rubric and quiz tools, and a rebuilt Practice My Knowledge feature drafts multiple-choice questions that teachers review and edit before assigning. Parents and teachers can read chat histories and receive alerts when content is flagged.

Pricing

The learner and parent plan costs $4 a month or $44 a year, before sales tax, and covers up to 10 children under 18. Teacher tools are free for verified teachers. Schools and districts buy through Khan Academy’s district partnerships, and those prices are not published.

What to Watch Out For

Paid plans are limited to the United States and need a US residence and billing address. Khan Academy has also been candid about uptake. Sal Khan said in 2026 that for many students the tutor was a non-event because they simply did not use it much, and the company has since built Khanmigo more directly into practice problems. Some students find its refusal to give direct answers frustrating. That is by design, but it limits the tool as quick homework help. Early gains from the new diagrams are preliminary figures from Khan Academy.

Recent News

In May 2026, Sal Khan told Chalkbeat that early Khanmigo had not changed much for many students and described an overhaul that places the tutor inside problem practice. On August 27, 2026, Khan Academy expanded its partnership with Google.org, adding Gemini-powered interactive diagrams and AI-drafted practice questions for the new school year.
