Comet costs nothing. Perplexity launched its AI browser in July 2025 for subscribers to its $200-a-month Max plan, then made it free worldwide on October 2, 2025. It now runs on Windows, macOS, Android and, since March 2026, iPhone.

The difference from an ordinary browser is the assistant that sits beside each page and can act on it. Perplexity pitches it as a way to hand off the small, repetitive jobs people do on the web every day.

How It Works

The sidecar assistant answers questions about the page you are on, summarizes content and moves through sites for you, opening links and following steps. For interactive jobs, it carries out the steps in your browser while you watch, and you can step in at any point. Perplexity says a rebuilt assistant, shipped to all users in mid-2026, handles multi-step tasks 23% better, based on its own testing.

Paid subscribers get more autonomy. Work mode runs tasks in the background through Perplexity’s cloud computer, drawing on a credit balance. Max subscribers can run several background assistants at once from a dashboard. They work through to-do lists, notify you when done and can run on a schedule, such as a daily summary of email and calendar.

Pricing

The browser and assistant are free, with no subscription. Perplexity Pro, at $20 a month, adds Work mode with a sign-up credit bonus and some weekly included usage. Max, at $200 a month, includes 10,000 Work-mode credits a month, background assistants and priority models. Perplexity also announced Comet Plus, a news subscription, at $5 a month for free users, though current plan pages no longer clearly list it.

What to Watch Out For

Security researchers, including teams at Brave, LayerX and Trail of Bits, have shown that hidden instructions in a page, email or calendar invite can trick the agent into acting for an attacker, especially in logged-in sessions. Perplexity has added a content classifier, permission prompts and file-access limits, but the problem is not solved. Keep connected accounts to a minimum and avoid letting the agent work inside banking, health or company systems. Amazon has also challenged the agent shopping on its site; an injunction was vacated on appeal in August 2026, but other claims continue.
