Penske Logistics is using Augie, an AI agent from the startup Augment, to check the status of an estimated 600,000 loads, calling, emailing or texting carrier dispatchers when tracking data is missing. Penske signed on in January 2026 after a six-month pilot and expects a 30% to 40% productivity gain. Augie is built for freight brokers, 3PLs, shippers and carriers, and it covers the order-to-cash cycle: quoting, dispatch, tracking, appointment scheduling, document collection and billing.
It is best for mid-size and large logistics operations with heavy, repetitive coordination work and a transportation management system to connect. It is sold like enterprise software: pricing is shared by quote, and large customers start with a pilot. Augment has raised $110 million, including an $85 million Series A led by Redpoint Ventures. This review is based on Augment’s announcements and freight-industry coverage as of October 2026; we have not tested it hands-on.
$35 Billion in Freight and Pilots Before Rollout
- Starting price: Custom quote; large customers such as Penske run a pilot before rolling out.
- Scale: Augment says it has more than $35 billion in freight under management, and Penske is using Augie on an estimated 600,000 loads.
- Reported results: At Armstrong Transport Group, reps went from about 10 loads a day to 20 or 30, its CEO told FreightWaves.
- Integrations: works across TMS platforms, load boards, shipper portals, email and phone, with a McLeod PowerBroker integration announced in August 2026.
- Our score: 7.7/10, with high autonomy, and room to grow through published pricing, lighter setup and public user ratings.

For a buyer, the Penske deal is the strongest signal. A logistics company of that size ran a six-month pilot before committing, and the first phase covers hundreds of thousands of loads across inbound, middle-mile and final-delivery moves. That is evidence Augie holds up at volume, at least on tracking work.
The results figures need more care. The 30% to 50% productivity gains and the Armstrong load counts come from Augment and its customers, not an independent study. Use them to set targets for a pilot rather than to forecast savings. The McLeod integration matters for a different reason: PowerBroker is widely used by brokers, and native support removes one of the bigger setup hurdles.
An AI Teammate Working Across Your TMS and Inbox
Augment calls Augie an AI teammate, and the description fits the workflow. It does not replace your TMS; it works across the same systems and channels a logistics coordinator uses, and you can text, email or call it like a colleague.
Front Office: Quotes, Carriers and Dispatch
Augie answers rate requests, quotes freight and dispatches loads. Inside McLeod’s PowerBroker, it handles inbound carrier calls and emails, validates carriers, handles negotiation and compliance checks, and writes updates back into the TMS. It uses operational data, carrier histories and company policies to guide its answers, according to Transport Topics.
Middle: Tracking and Appointments
Tracking is where Augie is most proven. When status is missing from normal feeds, it contacts the carrier’s dispatcher by call, email or text, using that carrier’s preferred channel, and follows each carrier’s escalation path. It books appointments and collects documents such as proofs of delivery. At Penske, this work supplements existing track-and-trace systems across inbound loads, middle-mile moves and final delivery.
Back Office: Billing and Compliance
On the back end, Augie handles billing and compliance tasks so loads move from delivery to invoice faster. That is the source of the reported 3-to-8-day reduction in billing cycles. Augment also announced plans for a logistics knowledge hub covering pricing, service and compliance intelligence.
Where People Step In
Augie hands exceptions to humans when needed. CRST’s vice president of transportation technology described the result as staff working the exceptions instead of keying every order, with McLeod as the system of record and Augie as the system of action. Your team still owns customer relationships, rate strategy, claims and anything that falls outside the rules you set.
Start With One Lane or One Workflow
- Talk to sales. Augment sells through direct conversations rather than self-serve sign-up.
- Scope a pilot. Pick a contained workflow, such as check calls on one lane or carrier onboarding, as Penske did with tracking.
- Connect systems. Link your TMS, email, phone and portals; McLeod PowerBroker users have a native integration.
- Set rules and escalation. Define what Augie can commit to carriers, when it must escalate and who receives exceptions.
- Expand by workflow. Move to quoting, appointments or billing once tracking results are measured.
Quoting, Dispatch and Tracking on a Custom Contract
Augment sells Augie through sales conversations and pilots, with pricing set in each contract.
| Plan | Price | Billing | What’s Included | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Augie (enterprise) | Custom quote | Contract | Quoting, dispatch, tracking, appointments, document collection, billing and compliance across phone, email, text and portals | Scoped per workflow and volume |
| Pilot | Negotiated | Pilot agreement | A defined workflow tested before rollout; Penske ran six months | Terms set per customer |
What a Quote Must Beat for a Ten-Rep Brokerage
These illustrative scenarios show what a quote has to beat. They use Augment’s and customers’ published figures plus clearly stated assumptions.
Ten-rep brokerage. Ten reps at 10 loads a day handle 100 loads. If they reached Armstrong’s reported 20 to 30 loads each, the same team would handle 200 to 300 loads a day without new hires. Compare the quote with the cost of the reps you would otherwise add.
Track-and-trace at scale. Assume each manual status check takes five minutes of a coordinator’s time. Across 600,000 loads, the volume in Penske’s first phase, that is 50,000 hours, or about 24 full-time years at 2,080 hours each. Measure your real minutes per check during a pilot.
Cash flow. A broker billing $1 million a month bills roughly $33,333 a day. Cutting the billing cycle by 3 to 8 days, as customers have reported, would mean about $100,000 to $267,000 less tied up in receivables.
Hidden and variable costs. Ask whether pricing is per load, per task or per seat, since that decides how costs scale in a busy season. Budget staff time for the pilot, TMS mapping and writing escalation rules, and for monitoring Augie’s carrier conversations in the first months.
Augie by Augment Compared With HappyRobot, Bland AI and Retell AI
HappyRobot is Augie’s most direct rival in freight. Bland AI and Retell AI are general voice-agent platforms some brokers use to build their own carrier calling.
| Tool | Starting Price | Free Plan | Main Strength | Main Trade-Off | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Augie by Augment | Custom quote | No (pilots) | Freight-native teammate covering quote to cash across phone, email, text, portals and TMS | Pricing by quote; sales-led setup | Mid-size and large brokers, 3PLs and shippers |
| HappyRobot | Custom quote (reported minimum of about $250,000 a year) | No | AI workers for voice, email, documents and browser tasks with large freight customers | High reported minimum spend | Large brokers and shippers with heavy call volume |
| Bland AI | $0 a month plus $0.14 a minute (reported) | Yes (Start, pay per minute) | Programmable voice agents at high call volume | Learning curve for conversation design | Teams with developers building custom calling |
| Retell AI | From $0.07 a minute, pay as you go | No ($10 free credit) | Low per-minute voice infrastructure with model choice | Needs build and testing time | Developers building voice agents |
Augie and HappyRobot are finished products for freight; Bland AI and Retell AI are toolkits that need building. Choose Augie if you want one agent across front and back office with native McLeod support. HappyRobot suits large operations comfortable with a big annual commitment. A broker with in-house engineers can build narrow carrier-calling flows on Bland or Retell for less, but will own the design, testing and TMS work. Brokers on McLeod PowerBroker and Busy 3PLs
- Freight brokers on McLeod PowerBroker: the native integration covers carrier selection, rate requests and tracking updates.
- 3PLs with heavy check-call volume: tracking by call, email or text is the use case Penske proved over a six-month pilot.
- Growing brokerages that want more loads per rep: Armstrong’s reported jump from 10 to 20 or 30 loads a day is the benchmark.
- Operations with slow billing: back-office document collection and billing target invoice delays and cash flow.
- Teams that coordinate in Slack, Teams and email: Augie can be messaged like a colleague. See our workflow automation agents for related tools.
Small Fleets and Owner-Operators May Prefer Pay-Per-Minute Tools
- Small fleets and owner-operators: the sales-led, pilot-first model is built for larger operations.
- Buyers who need published pricing: every deal is quoted.
- Brokers with engineering teams and narrow needs: a voice platform such as Retell AI may be cheaper for one calling workflow.
- Operations still defining escalation rules: an agent speaking to carriers works best with clear limits set before it starts.
Set Baselines Before Trusting Vendor Numbers
- Vendor-reported results: productivity, margin and billing figures come from Augment and its customers. Set baseline metrics before a pilot so you can measure your own.
- Your brand on the line: Augie calls and emails carriers on your behalf. Review scripts, commitments it can make and escalation paths before scaling.
- Integration fit: McLeod PowerBroker has native support; confirm how your TMS, load boards and portals connect early in the sales process.
- Record-keeping: make sure dispatchers can see what Augie promised a carrier and that calls and messages are logged in your system of record.
- Young company: Augment left stealth in March 2025. Its $110 million in funding gives it runway, and contracts can cover data export and transition support.
Augie Lands Inside McLeod PowerBroker
On August 5, 2026, McLeod Software and Augment announced an integration that puts Augie inside the PowerBroker TMS for carrier selection and tracking, with CRST among the first users, Transport Topics reported. On January 14, 2026, Penske Logistics said it was adopting Augment after a six-month pilot to validate the status of an estimated 600,000 loads.
On September 4, 2025, Augment raised an $85 million Series A led by Redpoint Ventures, bringing total funding to $110 million and reporting more than $35 billion in freight under management. In March 2025 it emerged from stealth with $25 million in seed funding led by 8VC.
Among the Most Credible Freight Agents Available
For mid-size and large brokers, 3PLs and shippers, Augie is one of the most credible freight agents available. It scores 7.7/10 on our scale. Autonomy is high: it calls, emails and texts carriers, updates the TMS and covers quote to cash, with exceptions passed to people. The Penske rollout on 600,000 loads and the McLeod integration show it works in production at real scale.
The score reflects how it is sold more than what it does. Pricing is shared by quote, setup runs through sales and pilots, and public user ratings have not appeared yet, so published pricing and reviews would lift it. Treat Augie like any enterprise system purchase: pick one workflow, set baseline metrics, run a pilot with clear escalation rules and then expand. Small fleets and teams that need published prices may find pay-per-minute voice platforms such as Bland AI or Retell AI a better fit.
How Freight Brokers Pay for Augie
How Is Augie by Augment Priced for Freight Brokers?
Augment does not publish prices. Deals are quoted after sales conversations, and large customers such as Penske start with a pilot. Ask whether pricing is per load, per task or per seat so you know how costs scale with volume.
Does Augie Integrate With McLeod PowerBroker?
Yes. McLeod and Augment announced an integration on August 5, 2026. Augie processes carrier calls and emails, responds to rate requests, validates carriers and writes shipment updates back into PowerBroker.
Can Augie Call Carriers Without a Human on the Line?
Yes. When tracking data is missing, Augie contacts carrier dispatchers by phone, email or text on its own, using each carrier’s preferred channel and escalation path. It hands exceptions to people when needed.
Augie or HappyRobot: Which Suits a Freight Brokerage?
Both are freight-specific and quote-only. Augie covers front and back office in one teammate and has native McLeod PowerBroker support, while HappyRobot has a reported minimum spend of about $250,000 a year and a broad enterprise customer base. Run both through a short pilot on the same workflow if your volume justifies it.
Who Founded Augment, the Company Behind Augie?
Augment was founded by CEO Harish Abbott, who built fulfillment software at Amazon and co-founded Deliverr, sold to Shopify for $2.1 billion. Co-founder Justin Hall, previously at Primo Logistics, YRC and GlobalTranz, joined as chief commercial officer.
