ChatGPT Work runs on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, in the desktop app for macOS and Windows, while web and mobile access starts with the $20-a-month Plus plan. In Work, ChatGPT breaks a request into steps and works across apps, files and websites for hours, returning finished documents, decks, spreadsheets or web apps.

OpenAI now points people to ChatGPT Work and its workspace agents in place of the ChatGPT agent mode it launched in July 2025. It runs on GPT-6 models.

How It Works

Work looks like chat, but answers take longer because the agent executes the job. Plan mode lets users agree on an approach first. More than 1,400 plugins connect it to tools such as Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Outlook and Salesforce, and users can call one with an @ mention or let ChatGPT pick the source.

The desktop app adds a built-in browser with multiple tabs, computer use that clicks, types and moves files in the background, and access to local files. Scheduled tasks run once, on a schedule or when an event occurs, and team tasks extend this to groups. Sites turns output into interactive web apps that can be shared internally or publicly, and ChatGPT Space gives Pro, Business and Enterprise teams a shared place for files and pages with view, comment or edit access. Users set which actions need approval, and an auto-review step checks sensitive actions before they run.

Pricing

There is no separate fee. Plus costs $20 a month. Pro tiers start at $100 a month with five times Plus usage, and $200 buys 20 times. OpenAI also lists a $500 Pro plan for its fastest GPT-6 model. Business costs $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually, with a $125 Premium seat and a two-seat minimum. Enterprise and Edu are quoted by sales.

Usage is not counted per message. Work draws on the same agentic allowance as Codex and ChatGPT for Excel, and bigger jobs consume more of it. Plus and Pro users can buy credits once the allowance runs out, and Enterprise and Edu admins can set spend limits by workspace, group or user.

What to Watch Out For

Costs are hard to predict because consumption depends on task size, complexity and model. Agents acting on the web can be hit by prompt injection. The free tier gets Work only on desktop. OpenAI often renames and merges its agent products.
