Square Managerbot for Restaurants, Shops and Salons

Square widened Managerbot’s open beta on April 28, 2026, to most non-franchise U.S. sellers in food and beverage, retail, and health and beauty, at no additional cost. It sits in Square Dashboard and on Square POS, watches sales, labor and inventory, and proposes actions: a staff schedule, a purchase order, an email campaign, a catalog fix. Nothing happens until the seller approves.

It suits independent restaurants, shops and salons already on Square that lack a back-office team. Because it costs nothing extra, the only real cost is the Square plan a seller already pays for. We score it 9.0/10 on our scale, led by price and setup, with reach beyond Square the main area to grow.

Square Managerbot in Five Points

  • Open beta widened April 28, 2026, for most non-franchise U.S. sellers in three verticals.
  • No additional cost on any Square plan, including the $0 Free plan.
  • Proposes schedules, purchase orders, campaigns and catalog fixes, then acts on approval.
  • Changes can be reversed by asking Managerbot.
  • Capterra reviewers rate Square for Restaurants 4.4 out of 5 across 54 reviews.

For a buyer, the price line settles most of the decision. A seller already on Square can open Managerbot and try it the same day. The more useful question is fit: the open beta covers three verticals in the U.S. and excludes franchises, and the agent only sees Square data.

The timeline also shows how Square built up to it. Square AI answered questions from June 2025, gained weather, events, news and review data in October 2025, and Managerbot added the step of acting on what it finds.

Why Square Built an Agent Into the Dashboard

Square’s pitch, in Willem Avé’s words, is to give every small business owner the kind of operational intelligence that used to take an entire back-office team. The design follows from that. Managerbot runs where sellers already work, on the Dashboard and the POS, and its tasks match the jobs a part-time office manager would take: reports, orders, rotas, campaigns and catalog tidying.

The approval rule is the other half of the design. Digital Transactions reported that the agent recommends and the owner signs off on each action. For a small business, that keeps the owner in charge of anything that touches money, staff or customers, while the agent does the drafting.

Square also announced a restaurant inventory partnership with MarketMan on April 2, 2026, a few weeks before the wider beta. Restaurants that track food costs closely will want to watch how that work connects with the stock checks Managerbot already runs.

How Managerbot Works Through a Day

Morning Snapshot

Managerbot posts a business snapshot covering sales, orders, items and customer trends. Sellers can filter by time, location, channel, item or customer, and ask follow-up questions in the compose box on the Dashboard homepage.

Stock and Purchase Orders

It tracks sales velocity against stock and flags likely shortages. It can create purchase orders from supplier invoices, packing lists or order confirmation emails and update inventory counts, which saves retyping a delivery note. For a cafe that receives several deliveries a week, that is several manual entries removed, and fewer chances of a miscounted case of stock.

Labor and Schedules

Managerbot analyzes staffing and labor costs and drafts team schedules. The manager reviews the draft and approves it, and the schedule goes live in Square, where staff already see their shifts.

Marketing and Catalog

It surfaces campaign ideas and can create and run email campaigns. It also bulk-updates catalog and menu items and flags gaps such as missing photos, missing descriptions or duplicate tax rates.

Approvals, Undo and Support

Every routine workflow waits for review and approval. A seller can ask Managerbot to reverse a change. It answers Square support questions and hands off to a live chat agent when needed. Ideas that do not fit can be dismissed with a click, which keeps the feed focused on what the owner cares about.

Managerbot Apps for Custom Needs

Account owners and admins can build custom Managerbot Apps with an outside AI coding tool and the Square CLI. Only owners and admins can create, manage or view them. Restoring an older app version does not undo changes it already made to Square data.

A Saturday at a Two-Location Cafe With Managerbot

Here is how the documented features fit a common case: a cafe owner with two sites on Square Plus who closes out each day alone. Every step uses a capability from Square’s help center.

Early Morning

The owner opens Square Dashboard on a phone. Managerbot has posted a snapshot comparing Friday’s sales at both sites, with the second location down on pastries. It also flags oat milk as likely to run out by Sunday, based on sales velocity against stock.

Mid-Morning

The supplier’s confirmation email for Monday’s delivery arrives. The owner asks Managerbot to turn it into a purchase order. It drafts the order and the inventory update, and the owner approves both.

Afternoon

Managerbot drafts next week’s schedule for both sites from labor costs and sales patterns. The owner swaps two shifts, then approves. Managerbot also suggests an email campaign for the quieter site; the owner edits the subject line and sends it.

Evening

A catalog check finds three new menu items missing photos and one item with a duplicate tax rate. Managerbot proposes a bulk fix, and the owner approves it before closing. Without the agent, each of these jobs would sit in a different part of Square.

Setting Up Managerbot for the First Month

Only owners and team members with full access can use Managerbot, so decide early who gets that level of access. Managers who should draft schedules but not touch pricing may need a separate review step. Start with read-only uses, such as snapshots and shortage flags, for the first week. Then add purchase orders and catalog fixes, approving each one. Leave schedules and campaigns for week three, after you have seen how its drafts match your habits. If a change goes wrong, ask Managerbot to reverse it; for Managerbot Apps, remember that restoring an older version does not undo data changes already made.

Square Plans Around Managerbot

Plus$492.5% + 15 cents2.9% + 30 cents
Premium$1492.4% + 15 cents2.9% + 30 cents

Managerbot itself has no fee. Kitchen display and kiosk devices cost extra on Plus and Premium. When a request needs a feature from a higher tier, Managerbot recommends the upgrade and explains its cost, so watch for those suggestions before approving.

What the Agent Is Worth at Three Sizes

Since Managerbot is free, we framed value as the plan a seller already holds and the work it takes off the owner.

BusinessLikely PlanMonthly Software CostWork Managerbot Drafts
Single cafeFree$0 plus card feesDaily snapshot, supplier purchase orders, menu fixes
Two-location restaurantPlus$49 plus card feesSchedules per site, shortage flags, campaigns
Full-service restaurant groupPremium$149 plus card feesLocation comparisons, labor review, catalog clean-up

For the cafe, the agent adds no cost at all. For the restaurant group, the comparison is with a part-time back-office hire, since schedule drafts, order entry and catalog checks are the tasks such a person would handle.

Managerbot Compared With Toast IQ, Shopify Sidekick and Nory

Toast IQToast IQ Team $60/month plus $9 per employeeAssistant included for Toast usersRestaurant-specific scheduling agentRestaurant focus only
Shopify SidekickIncluded with Shopify plans from $29/month yearlyNo free Shopify planStore setup, reports and edits for online sellersBuilt for e-commerce more than in-person
NoryCustom quoteNoRestaurant forecasting and labor depthNo published prices

Toast IQ is the closest match for restaurants and charges for its team features. Nory goes deeper on forecasting for larger groups. Shopify Sidekick suits online-first sellers. Managerbot’s edge is price and breadth for sellers already on Square.

The comparison also turns on switching cost. A restaurant on Toast or a store on Shopify would not move payment systems for an agent, so for most sellers the real choice is the agent that comes with their current platform. For sellers still choosing a point of sale, a free agent inside the Free plan is a point in Square’s favor. Our small business agents and restaurant agents pages list more options.

Square Sellers Who Gain the Most

Owner-operators who close out the day themselves gain the most, since Managerbot takes on the reports, orders and schedules they would otherwise do at night. Multi-location restaurants were the first testers and get location breakdowns and labor reviews. Shops with large catalogs can use the bulk updates to fix missing photos and descriptions across hundreds of items, a job that rarely gets done by hand.

Salons and spas in the health and beauty vertical can use the schedule drafts and email campaigns to fill quiet days.

New sellers gain too. Someone who opened a shop this year and has never written a purchase order or a campaign gets a first draft for each, along with an explanation of what the numbers show. Square’s free plan means the cost of trying is limited to card fees on sales that would happen anyway.

Sellers Who May Need Another Tool for Now

Franchise locations and sellers outside the U.S. are not part of the open beta. Businesses that run their stock, staff or marketing in other systems will find Managerbot sees only Square data. Groups that need detailed demand forecasting across many sites may want a dedicated restaurant operations platform.

Accuracy, Undo and Data Terms in Managerbot

Square’s help center says Managerbot supports only certain data and workflows, can make mistakes and does not give legal, financial, tax or employment advice. Check schedules against labor rules and purchase orders against supplier prices before approving. Using it means accepting Square’s Generative AI Terms, and it draws on account data and public web information.

Capterra reviewers of Square for Restaurants mention fees that add up, updates that sometimes upset printers and uneven support. Those are platform points, but they shape the experience around the agent too.

Rephrasing a request more precisely often gives a better answer, according to Square, so specific prompts such as naming the location, date range and item work better than broad questions.

Our Read on Square Managerbot at 9.0 Out of 10

Managerbot scores 9.0 out of 10 on our scale. Pricing and setup rate highest because eligible sellers get it at no added cost inside tools they already use. Autonomy rates well: it watches the business and acts once approved. Integrations score lower since it works only inside Square.

Start with the morning snapshot and purchase orders for two weeks, approving each action, then add schedules once the drafts match how you staff.

Keep a running tally during that period: actions approved as drafted, actions edited and actions rejected. A high share of approvals as drafted means the agent fits your routines well enough to take on more; a high rejection rate means it is better used for snapshots and alerts for now. Share the tally with any manager who has full access, so everyone approves to the same standard.
