Meta Business Agent Sells and Books Inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram
More than one million businesses had already run a version of Meta’s AI agent on WhatsApp and Messenger before Meta launched Business Agent worldwide on June 3, 2026. The agent replies to customers in Meta’s messaging apps, recommends products from the business catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and completes sales. It answers in the customer’s language and hands the chat to staff under rules the business sets.
It suits small and mid-size businesses that already sell through chat, which in many markets means WhatsApp. Getting started is free, paid tiers sit inside Meta’s WhatsApp Business subscription, and large companies pay by token use. We score it 8.8/10 on our scale.
Meta Business Agent at Launch
- Launched globally on June 3, 2026, at Meta’s Conversations event in London.
- Works on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with Instagram newly added.
- Answers questions, recommends catalog products, books appointments, qualifies leads and completes sales.
- Free to start; paid subscription tiers and token-based pricing for large businesses.
- The WhatsApp Business iPhone app is rated 4.7 out of 5 from about 1.5 million ratings.
How the Agent Handles a Customer Chat
Business Agent works where customers already message the business. A shopper sends a WhatsApp message or an Instagram DM, and the agent replies on the business’s behalf.
Answering and Recommending
The agent answers questions specific to the business, such as opening hours, delivery areas or sizing. It can recommend products from the business catalog, so a question like “do you have this in blue under $50” gets a product suggestion inside the chat.
Booking and Qualifying
Service businesses can let the agent book appointments. Sales-led businesses can have it qualify incoming leads, asking the questions a rep would ask before passing a warm prospect on.
Closing the Sale
According to Meta’s launch coverage, the agent can complete sales in the conversation. For a small shop selling through WhatsApp, that removes the step of sending a customer to a website to check out.
Handing Over to Staff
Businesses define the conditions under which a person steps in. A florist might hand over any order for a wedding; a clinic might hand over anything about symptoms. Meta’s TechCrunch briefing also listed rerouting to a human as a core capability.
Language
The agent replies in the customer’s local language. For businesses serving several language groups, that removes the need for separate scripts.
Launch Numbers From Meta Conversations 2026
These figures come from launch coverage and Apple’s App Store.
| Fact | Detail | Source and Date |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | Business Agent available globally | TechCrunch, June 3, 2026 |
| Testing period | Close to two years in WhatsApp Business, including India and Mexico | TechCrunch, June 3, 2026 |
| Earlier adoption | More than one million businesses ran a version before launch | PPC Land, June 2026 |
| Daily reach | One billion people connect with businesses daily across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram | PPC Land, June 2026 |
| Pricing model | Free to start; subscription tiers; token-based pricing for large businesses | TechCrunch, June 3, 2026 |
| Subscription | Included in Meta One, a new business subscription tier | Agile Brand Guide, June 4, 2026 |
| Enterprise platform | Connects third-party systems such as Shopify and Zendesk | PPC Land, June 2026 |
| App rating | WhatsApp Business: 4.7 out of 5 from about 1.5 million ratings | Apple App Store |
The million-business figure is the one that sets Business Agent apart. Most AI support agents launch with a few hundred design partners. Meta’s agent reached global launch after a long run inside the app, which means many of its rough edges were met by real shops first.
The daily reach number explains the opportunity. If a business’s customers already message it on WhatsApp, an agent that answers there needs no new channel, no widget and no customer education.
Features Meta Has Announced but Not Fully Rolled Out
Some of what Meta showed in June was still in testing or on a waitlist. A daily briefing that summarizes overnight chats and offers insights was being tested with select accounts across the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite.
Meta also described work on market research, highlighting product features, managing calendars and pulling competitive insights from chats, with no release dates. Another feature in development lets people find agent-powered businesses through the WhatsApp search bar, by name, phone number or a shared contact card.
Buyers should plan around what is live today: answers, recommendations, bookings, lead qualification, sales and handoff. The rest is upside if it arrives.
Free Start, Subscriptions and Token Pricing
Meta’s pricing comes in three layers, and the details differ by business size.
| Layer | Who It Is For | How It Is Billed | What Meta Has Said |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic agent | Any business | Free to start | Configure and have it replying within minutes |
| Subscription tiers | Small and mid-size businesses | Monthly subscription | Agent included in some tiers of the paid WhatsApp Business subscription, reported as Meta One; more tiers planned |
| Usage pricing | Large businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform | Token usage | Consumption-based billing |
| Business Agent Platform | Enterprises building custom agents | Not yet priced publicly | Connects systems such as Shopify and Zendesk |
Planning the Budget
For a small business, the starting cost is zero, and the first test should stay there. Turn on the basic agent, watch a week of chats and count how many it resolved, booked or sold.
The WhatsApp Business app also sells Meta Verified for business subscriptions, which the App Store lists at $14.99 and $49.99 price points. Those are separate from the agent and cover verification and account features.
Large companies should model token costs on real volumes before switching all traffic to the agent. A high-volume retailer with long product conversations will pay more per chat than a salon booking short appointments.
Business Agent Compared With Fin, Lyro and Zipchat
We compared Meta’s agent with chat agents that sell and support, using published pricing from our listings.
| Agent | Starting Price | Free Option | Main Strength | Main Gap | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Agent | Free to start | Yes | Native to WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram | Meta channels only | Chat-first small businesses |
| Fin AI Agent by Intercom | $0.99 per outcome | No | Resolves support across web, email and messaging | Per-outcome costs grow with volume | Support teams |
| Lyro by Tidio | $39 a month | Limited | Low-cost Shopify chat with store actions | Conversation caps per plan | Small online stores |
| Zipchat AI | $64 a month billed yearly | Limited | Sales-focused store chat with a Shopify free tier | Reply-based limits | Shopify brands |
The main question is where customers write in. If most messages arrive on WhatsApp or Instagram, Meta’s agent sits right in that stream and costs nothing to try. If customers use the website chat and email, Fin or Lyro covers those channels. Many shops will run both: Meta’s agent for social messaging and a store chat agent for the website. Our customer support agents page and ecommerce agents page list more.
A Bakery’s Saturday With Business Agent
This example uses the documented actions; the business is illustrative.
A neighborhood bakery takes custom cake orders on WhatsApp. On Saturday morning, a customer asks whether a chocolate cake for 12 people can be ready by Tuesday. The agent checks the catalog, recommends two sizes and quotes the prices listed there.
The customer picks one and asks to collect at 4 p.m. The agent books the pickup slot. A second customer asks about a three-tier wedding cake. The bakery’s rule says wedding orders go to the owner, so the agent passes the chat along with the details collected so far.
By evening, the owner has one wedding inquiry to answer and a list of confirmed small orders, none of which needed her phone during the morning rush.
Businesses Suited to Business Agent
Shops, salons, clinics, tutors, restaurants and service firms that already get most inquiries through WhatsApp gain the most. Owners who answer messages themselves between other jobs get the biggest time back, since the agent covers evenings and busy hours. In markets where WhatsApp is the default way to contact a business, the agent covers the main customer channel on day one.
Businesses running click-to-WhatsApp ads also fit, since ad clicks open a chat that the agent can answer and convert. Our social media agents page covers tools for the content side of those campaigns.
Instagram sellers get a new option. Meta added Instagram DMs to the agent at launch, so product questions under a post can turn into a guided sale. Creators and small brands that sell from their feed can answer DMs at any hour without hiring help, and send the tricky ones to themselves.
Ads That Open a Chat the Agent Can Close
Many small businesses already run ads that open a WhatsApp chat when tapped. Before the agent, each of those chats waited for a person, and replies slowed down at night and on weekends. With Business Agent answering, the chat that an ad starts can move straight to a product suggestion, a booking or a sale.
That changes how to judge ad spend. Track how many ad-started chats the agent turns into bookings or orders, and compare cost per sale before and after. If the agent converts chats that used to go cold overnight, the same ad budget produces more sales.
Keep an eye on the questions ads generate. A promotion that draws many questions the agent cannot answer is a sign the catalog or business details need more information.
Businesses That May Need Something Else
Companies whose customers rarely use Meta’s apps will see little traffic for the agent. Web chat, email and phone need other tools.
Large enterprises wanting the agent to read order systems, help desks or ERPs should check the Business Agent Platform’s rollout status before planning around it, since Meta was still building it at launch.
Regulated businesses, such as clinics or financial firms, should write handoff rules carefully and test them before going live. A clinic, for example, may want every message that mentions pain, medicine or test results sent to staff at once.
Getting the Agent Ready for Customers
Meta says a basic agent can be set up and replying within minutes. The quality of its answers still depends on what the business gives it, so a little preparation pays back quickly.
Start with the catalog. Every product the agent might recommend needs a clear name, price, photo and stock status. If the business sells services, list them with durations and prices so bookings come out right.
Next, gather the questions customers ask most. Opening hours, delivery areas, returns and payment options cover most small-business chats. Put the answers where the agent can use them.
Then write the handoff rules and test them. Send the agent a complaint, a refund request and a large order from a staff member’s phone, and check that each reaches a person.
Finally, watch the first week closely. Read a sample of chats each evening and fix any answers that went wrong at the source, usually the catalog or the business details.
Account Health, Data and Handoff Rules
WhatsApp Business App Store reviews include complaints about accounts being banned or logged out, sometimes after a number change. Meta’s developer replies point users to Settings, Help, Contact Us. Any business relying on the agent for sales should keep its account in good standing with Meta’s policies and have a backup contact route for customers.
Write handoff rules before turning the agent on. Typical triggers are complaints, refunds, large orders and anything health or legal. Meta lets businesses define those conditions.
Keep the catalog accurate. The agent recommends from it, so stale prices or out-of-stock items lead to wrong answers in the chat. Set a weekly reminder to review stock and prices, and update them before any promotion goes live.
Meta Business Agent’s Road to a Global Launch
- Before June 2026: Meta tested AI support agents in WhatsApp Business for close to two years, including in India and Mexico, as TechCrunch reported.
- June 3, 2026: Meta launched Business Agent globally at Conversations in London, adding Instagram and previewing the Business Agent Platform for enterprises.
- June 2026: coverage noted the agent’s inclusion in Meta One, a new business subscription tier.
Scoring Business Agent at 8.8
Meta Business Agent earns 8.8/10 on our scale. Autonomy is high: it answers, recommends, books, qualifies and sells, with human handoff on the business’s terms. Setup is quick and free to start. User sentiment reflects the WhatsApp Business app’s 4.7 rating on a huge base, adjusted for account-ban complaints.
Integrations are the softer area at launch, since enterprise connections to Shopify and Zendesk were still being built. Pricing value is good at the free tier, and fuller published tier prices would raise it.
