Handoff Score

Our editorial score across six weighted criteria, based on Handoff’s published documentation, pricing and public user ratings. How we score

  • Autonomy8.3

Handoff builds full estimates from a spoken description or plans, drafts proposals and change orders and runs takeoffs on Scale, and the contractor reviews and sends everything.

  • Ease of Setup9.3

Contractors can start a 7-day free trial on their own with web and mobile apps, and G2 lists implementation at under a month.

  • Pricing Value8.8

Prices are published from $119 a month billed annually with a free trial; Pro and Scale need a 12-month commitment and Flex includes 50 AI credits a month.

  • Integrations8.3

Handoff ties estimates to Home Depot and Lowe's pricing and offers Zapier, an API and an MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT, with API and MCP limited to Scale.

  • Trust and Security7.5

MCP access runs on a key the user generates and is limited to the trial and Scale plan, and card and ACH payouts go straight to the contractor's bank account.

  • User Sentiment9.3

G2 rates Handoff 4.7 from 116 reviews and Capterra 4.5 from 42, adjusted slightly because some reviewers say AI prices need manual correction.

A San Antonio remodeler landed a $118,000 job in his first month on Handoff, going from first contact to signed contract in under 24 hours with no back-office staff, according to Handoff’s customer story. That is the pitch in one example: describe a job out loud, and an AI teammate turns it into a priced estimate, a branded proposal and a deposit request.

Handoff suits remodelers, small residential builders and trade contractors in the US who lose evenings to paperwork. It publishes its prices, starting at $119 a month billed annually with a 7-day free trial. Accuracy at the edges is the main thing to check: reviewers like the speed but say some AI-generated labor and material prices need correcting, and AI takeoffs come only on the $719-a-month Scale plan. We rate it 8.6/10 on our scale. We have not used Handoff ourselves; this review is based on Handoff’s pricing and product pages, company announcements and public reviews.

40,000 Contractors and Plans From $119 a Month

  • More than 40,000 contractors have used Handoff, and it reports over 10,000 monthly active users and more than $6 billion in annualized construction projects.
  • Plans run from $119 a month (Flex, two users, 50 AI credits) to $719 a month (Scale, AI takeoffs, API and MCP), billed annually, with a 7-day free trial.
  • Estimates are priced from cost data Handoff says it updates daily for every US city, tied to Home Depot and Lowe’s pricing.
  • An MCP server lets Claude or ChatGPT create projects, build estimates and manage invoices in Handoff on the Scale plan.
  • Reviewers rate it 4.7 on G2 from 116 reviews but say some AI prices need manual adjustment, so treat estimates as drafts.

The investor list is the most telling row. Nemetschek owns Bluebeam, the PDF markup tool many contractors already use on drawings, and Masco sells products that end up in the homes these contractors remodel. Strategic investors like these tend to want deeper links with suppliers and design tools, and Handoff’s Supplier Platform, which prices takeoffs with a supplier’s own SKUs, points in that direction.

The user numbers matter for a different reason. An estimating tool learns from volume, and a base of more than 10,000 monthly users across $6 billion in annualized projects gives Handoff a lot of real jobs to calibrate against. Some reviewers still ask for more accurate local pricing, but the volume suggests the cost data is built on more than a static catalog.

From First Conversation to Final Payment for Residential Jobs

Handoff runs on the web and on iOS and Android. It covers the path from first conversation to final payment for residential jobs, and it supports 25 trade types, including remodelers, roofers, electricians and HVAC contractors.

From Description to Estimate

  • Describe the job: the contractor talks or types through the project, or uploads drawings, photos and documents. Handoff reads files for square footage, quantities and material lists.
  • Price it locally: Handoff builds an itemized estimate priced for the project address, using supplier catalog data and labor rates it says it tracks nationwide and updates daily, with Home Depot and Lowe’s as connected pricing sources.
  • Review and adjust: the contractor checks quantities, labor and materials and edits anything that does not match local reality.
  • Send a proposal: one click turns the estimate into a proposal with an AI-written project description, photos, documents and e-signature. Pro and Scale add branded proposals and up to five options for the client to compare.
  • Get paid: Handoff creates an invoice from the signed proposal, requests a deposit and accepts card or ACH, with funds deposited to the contractor’s bank account.

Running the Job

After the sale, Handoff handles project management, AI change orders, daily logs, scheduling, budget tracking, time tracking, a client portal and, on Scale, a subcontractor portal. Pro adds AI site walkthroughs and what Handoff calls an AI Teammate business advisor. Homeowner financing through Acorn Finance can be offered on proposals at no cost to the contractor.

AI Takeoffs on Scale

On the Scale plan, contractors upload residential plans up to 7,000 square feet and get a priced takeoff with material and labor quantities, averaging one to two hours. Flex, Pro and trial users do not get takeoffs.

Working With Claude and ChatGPT

Handoff offers an MCP server during the 7-day trial and on Scale. A user generates a key and connects Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP-compatible assistant, which can then create projects, build estimates and manage invoices in Handoff. For contractors who already plan their week in an AI assistant, that turns Handoff into a tool the assistant can use directly. Zapier workflows and an API are also available.

Contractors Must Check Every Labor and Material Line

The contractor still owns the numbers. Reviewers say some labor and material prices need adjusting and that estimates sometimes miss items, so every estimate needs a check before it goes out. Site conditions, client relationships, crew management and the final price remain human decisions.

Annual Rates Listed on Handoff’s Pricing Page

Handoff publishes its prices. These figures are from its pricing page in October 2026, shown on annual billing.

Flex Plan Math for a Remodeler and One Helper

These scenarios use Handoff’s published annual prices. Business sizes and deposit amounts are our own illustrative assumptions.

  • A solo remodeler with a helper on Flex: $119 a month comes to $1,428 a year for two users and 50 AI credits a month. Heavy users who run out of credits would need Pro.
  • A five-person remodeling firm on Pro: $239 a month is $2,868 a year, or $1,440 more than Flex, for unlimited AI credits, project management and branded multi-option proposals.
  • A residential builder that wants takeoffs on Scale: $719 a month is $8,628 a year, with AI takeoffs for homes up to 7,000 square feet and API and MCP access.
  • Card fees on a $20,000 deposit: 3.35% on Flex is $670, against $570 at 2.85% on Pro or Scale. Handoff says the client pays the fee, which the contractor may need to explain.

Costs to plan for beyond the subscription: the 12-month commitment on Pro and Scale, time spent correcting AI prices for your market, and card fees that clients may push back on.

Handoff Compared With Togal.AI, ServiceTitan Atlas and Procore Agents

Handoff is a residential business system with AI at the center. The closest comparisons are a takeoff specialist and two agents built into larger contractor platforms.

For a residential contractor, Handoff is the only option here with a free trial and a price you can see before talking to sales. Togal.AI is the better takeoff tool for commercial bids, and one Togal seat costs about $3,588 a year against $8,628 for Handoff Scale, though Scale covers five users and the rest of the business. ServiceTitan Atlas and Procore Agents suit larger firms already on those platforms. Browse more in our AI agents for construction and small business guides.

Remodelers Without Office Staff Losing Jobs to Slow Quotes

  • Remodelers without office staff: estimates, proposals and deposits come from one app, often from a phone on site.
  • Contractors who lose jobs to slow quotes: the Bellamore example shows a same-day path from first call to signed contract.
  • Small firms that want a known price: plans are published, and Flex has a 7-day free trial.
  • Trades that work from photos and conversations rather than full plan sets: voice and photo inputs suit kitchens, baths, roofs and repairs.
  • Contractors who already use Claude or ChatGPT: the MCP server on Scale lets an assistant create projects and estimates.

Commercial Builders and Estimators Doing Big Takeoffs

  • Commercial contractors: Handoff is built for residential work, and takeoffs stop at 7,000 square feet.
  • Estimators who need exact quantities on large plan sets: a takeoff specialist such as Togal.AI fits better.
  • Firms outside the US: cost data and localization cover US cities.
  • Contractors with firm, well-tested pricing books: if your own numbers are already reliable, AI pricing adds less, though the proposal and payment tools may still help.
  • Companies already running on ServiceTitan or Procore: their built-in agents avoid a second system.

Local Price Accuracy Noted on Capterra

  • Price accuracy: Capterra reviewers say some labor and material prices do not match local costs and that quotes for the same items can vary. Check every line before sending.
  • Missing items: some reviewers say estimates leave out items that belong on the job.
  • Annual terms: Pro and Scale require a 12-month commitment.
  • Credit caps on Flex: 50 AI usage credits a month can run out for busy contractors.
  • Card fees passed to clients: one reviewer preferred not to pass card fees to customers, and some clients may feel the same.
  • Delivery checks: a few reviewers report estimates sent by text or email that did not reach clients, so confirm receipt on important bids.

Nemetschek and Masco Back a $5.8 Million Round

Small Residential Contractors Come Out Ahead

For small residential contractors, yes. Handoff scores 8.6/10 on our scale: strong on ease of setup, pricing transparency and user sentiment, with room to grow on integrations, documented security and local price accuracy. It does what most small contractors need most, which is getting a professional estimate and proposal in front of a homeowner quickly and getting the deposit paid.

Start with the 7-day free trial and run three or four past jobs through it. Compare Handoff’s numbers with what you actually charged, and look closely at labor rates. If the gaps are small, Pro is the plan most growing firms will want; choose Scale only if you need plan takeoffs or want Claude or ChatGPT working inside Handoff.

Trial, Estimate Accuracy and Takeoffs From Plans

How Much Does Handoff Cost per Month?

On annual billing, Flex costs $119 a month for two users, Pro costs $239 a month for five users and Scale costs $719 a month for five or more users. Pro and Scale require a 12-month commitment, and a Supplier Platform is priced by quote.

Does Handoff Have a Free Trial?

Yes. Flex comes with a 7-day free trial, and MCP access is included during the trial so you can test it with Claude or ChatGPT.

How Accurate Are Handoff’s AI Estimates?

Handoff prices estimates from supplier and labor data it says it updates daily for every US city. Reviewers praise the speed but report that some labor and material prices need manual adjustment, so treat each estimate as a draft.

Can Handoff Do Takeoffs From Plans?

Yes, on the Scale plan. AI takeoffs cover residential plans up to 7,000 square feet and take one to two hours on average. Flex, Pro and trial users do not get takeoffs.
