Hex’s Professional plan costs $36 a month and includes the Hex agent, which writes SQL and Python, pulls data from the warehouse and builds charts from a plain-English request. A free Community plan includes the agent too.
Hex was founded by a team that worked together at Palantir, led by CEO Barry McCardel and CTO Caitlin Colgrove, and is based in San Francisco. Customers include Reddit, StubHub, HubSpot, Cisco, Figma, Anthropic, Rivian and the NBA.
How It Works
The agent sits inside Hex’s notebooks. An analyst asks a question, and the agent finds the right tables, writes the queries, joins data, applies window functions where needed and produces visualizations. Each step appears as a notebook cell, so analysts can read the SQL, edit it, duplicate cells or ask for new cuts of the data. In one Hex example, a pricing analysis that would normally take weeks was drafted in a few hours, though the author still advised an analyst review.
For non-technical staff, Threads offers conversational analytics, letting people ask questions in chat while Context Studio governs the definitions and data the AI uses. Results can be shared as data apps or embedded in customer-facing products, and a Hex CLI serves developers. In late August 2026, Hex renamed its Notebook agent to Hex agent.
Pricing
Hex lists four plans: Community, which is free; Professional at $36; Team at $75; and Enterprise, priced through sales. The Hex agent appears on the Community and Professional plans. Larger deployments are sold through enterprise contracts that depend on seats, usage, security and deployment needs.
What to Watch Out For
The agent speeds up drafting but does not replace checking: wrong joins or definitions can still slip through. Hex is in the middle of a large rebuild, with a code-first Hex 4.0 in private beta set to replace parts of the current product. Plan contents have also moved around; the Team plan card no longer shows the Threads and semantic model agents it once listed, so confirm what each tier includes before buying.
