Smartling AI Agents Score

Our editorial score across six weighted criteria, based on Smartling AI Agents’s published documentation, pricing and public user ratings. How we score

  • Autonomy9.0

The LQA Agent can score translations and publish error-free content with no human reviewer, and Auto Select LLM handles model choice, prompting and benchmarking on its own.

  • Ease of Setup7.3

Smartling scopes every contract before quoting and offers demos rather than a free trial, though no workflow changes are needed to switch on Auto Select LLM.

  • Pricing Value6.8

Pricing is shared by quote; the AWS Marketplace listing starts at $49,000 a year with non-refundable fees, and Capterra users rate value for money 2.9.

  • Integrations9.0

Smartling lists more than 50 connectors, including Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, WordPress and Figma, an MCP server and an AI Hub of 20+ engines.

  • Trust and Security9.5

Smartling lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO/IEC 42001:2023, HITRUST e1, HIPAA, PCI DSS Level 1 and GDPR, and customers keep and can export their linguistic assets.

  • User Sentiment8.3

Capterra rates Smartling 3.4 from 18 reviews, with some reviewers asking for clearer, lower pricing and machine output that needs less editing.

Smartling’s LQA Agent can read a translation, score it against the MQM quality framework and publish it without any human seeing it. In the company’s internal testing it agreed with human reviewers 90% of the time and caught severe errors with 99% accuracy. That makes Smartling one of the few enterprise translation platforms willing to take people out of the review step entirely, if the customer chooses.

Smartling AI Agents suit large brands that translate websites, apps and marketing at scale and need a long list of security certifications. Price is the main consideration: there is no public price list, its AWS Marketplace listing starts at $49,000 for a year, and Capterra users rate its value for money 2.9 out of 5. We rate it 8.3/10 on our scale. We have not used Smartling ourselves; this review is based on Smartling’s press releases, its AWS Marketplace listing, funding coverage and public reviews.

An LQA Agent That Can Publish Without a Reviewer

  • The LQA Agent scores every translation and can publish error-free content with no human reviewer; Smartling reports 90% agreement with human reviewers.
  • Smartling reported 218% growth in AI and AI-human translation in 2025, and says customers include IHG, Pinterest, State Farm and British Airways.
  • Pricing is quote-based; the AWS Marketplace listing is $49,000 for 12 months, billed per translated word, with non-refundable fees.
  • Security documentation is the strongest in this group: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HITRUST e1, HIPAA and PCI DSS Level 1.
  • Vitruvian Partners took a majority stake in September 2026 to fund agentic localization tools.

Accuracy and Growth Figures Smartling Publishes

Smartling publishes more hard numbers than most of its rivals, from agent accuracy to growth rates, and its 2026 ownership change adds context on where the product is going.

The LQA Agent figures deserve the closest look. A 90% agreement rate with human reviewers means one judgment in ten differs, which suits help center articles and calls for more care with legal or medical content. The 99% figure applies to severe errors, the ones that cause real damage, and that is the more useful number when deciding which content can skip review.

The ownership change matters for buyers signing multi-year deals. Vitruvian’s stated plans include more agentic tools, LLM-based quality evaluation and self-service features, plus acquisitions. That points to a broader product, and possibly to more self-service buying options than the current quote-only model.

Agents Working Across the LanguageAI Platform

Smartling’s agents sit inside its LanguageAI platform, a translation management system with workflow automation, translator tools, reporting and a translation proxy. They work on whatever content the platform receives, whether it is translated by AI, by AI with human editing or by professional linguists.

The Agents and Automations

  • Auto Select LLM: extends Smartling’s model selection to large language models. It chooses the model, handles prompt engineering and benchmarks results continuously, using retrieval-augmented generation that draws on the customer’s translation memory and glossaries.
  • AI Post-Editing Agent: checks grammar, tone and semantic accuracy and adds linguistic assets.
  • Hallucination detection: flags likely LLM errors and routes the affected content to another workflow.
  • LQA Agent: evaluates quality with MQM, sorts errors by type and severity, and gives each language a score and a pass or fail. It works on every translation method in Smartling.
  • Language Adaptation: adapts existing translations to regional variants, such as US to UK English or Brazilian to European Portuguese, without full retranslation.

Automatic or Supervised

The main choice for a customer is how far to trust the LQA Agent. In fully automatic mode, content that passes is published with no human reviewer. In supervised mode, content with detected issues goes to human review and clean content moves on. Smartling’s network of more than 4,000 professional linguists can handle that review if the customer does not have its own.

Preview Features

Three May 2026 additions launched in preview: Style Rules for AI, which applies punctuation, date formats and regional standards across more than 30 locales; Instant AI Translation through a synchronous API, with connectors for Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, WordPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Figma; and AI Image Translation, which extracts text from product photos and banners, translates it and rebuilds the image.

Getting Content In and Out

Smartling claims 99.9% automation of content ingestion through a customizable API, more than 50 connectors and its Global Delivery Network, a translation proxy that serves translated versions of a website without rebuilding it in each language. An MCP server connects the platform to AI assistants and developer tools, so translation requests can come from the same places engineers and marketers already work. On the analyst side, Smartling says it was named a Leader in The Forrester Wave for localization services and a top translation management system by CSA Research and G2 users, and leaders from Spotify, DocuSign, DoorDash and SumUp spoke at its 2026 Global Ready Conference.

Which Content Runs Fully Automatic Is a Human Call

People decide which content types run in fully automatic mode, review anything the LQA Agent flags and maintain glossaries and translation memories. Brand-critical launches and regulated content are the obvious candidates to keep on a supervised path, since one in ten LQA judgments differed from human reviewers in Smartling’s own testing.

Quote-Based, With an AWS Listing as the Published Price

Smartling sells by quote. Its AWS Marketplace listing is the only published figure, and Smartling says price depends on translation type, content volume and how automated the workflow is.

A Year on the AWS Contract at Different Word Volumes

These scenarios use the AWS Marketplace price. The word volumes are our own illustrations, and the per-word figures cover the platform contract only.

  • One year on the AWS listing: $49,000 works out to about $4,083 a month.
  • A brand translating 2 million words a year: the same contract equals about 2.45 cents per word. At 5 million words, it falls to about 0.98 cents per word.
  • A two-year commitment: two consecutive 12-month contracts total $98,000, and the listing says fees are non-refundable, so it is worth piloting before committing to a second year.

Variable costs to plan for: professional human translation from Smartling’s linguist network, which Smartling says delivers human quality at half the cost and twice the speed of traditional approaches; AWS infrastructure costs if you buy through the marketplace; and LLM usage, which Smartling noted rose sharply among customers in 2025.

Because the meter is translated words, the best way to cut cost is to send fewer words through expensive routes. Content that the LQA Agent passes in automatic mode never reaches a paid reviewer, while Language Adaptation can reuse an existing translation for a regional variant instead of paying for a second full translation. Ask Smartling to price each route separately so you can see what moving a content type from supervised to automatic would save.

Smartling AI Agents Compared With Phrase, LILT and Smartcat

Smartling’s closest rivals are other enterprise translation platforms that have added agents. The real differences are how much each lets AI publish on its own, how prices are shown and how much security paperwork comes with the contract.

If certifications decide the deal, Smartling leads. If budget visibility matters most, Phrase publishes plans from $525 a month and Smartcat starts at $100. LILT is the closer match for teams that want verified human review built into every high-stakes route. Security-Heavy Enterprises and High-Volume Brands

  • Enterprises with demanding security reviews: ISO 42001 for AI management, HITRUST e1, HIPAA and PCI DSS Level 1 cover most procurement checklists.
  • Brands translating high volumes of low-risk content: help articles, product listings and app strings are where letting the LQA Agent publish clean content saves the most time.
  • Teams that want model choice without managing models: Auto Select LLM chooses among 20+ engines and handles prompts and benchmarking.
  • Companies with regional variants: Language Adaptation turns existing translations into other regional versions without starting over.
  • Teams worried about lock-in: customers keep ownership of translation memories, glossaries and translated content and can export them at any time.

Mid-Size Teams Facing a $49,000 Entry Point

  • Small and mid-size teams: a $49,000 annual entry point on AWS is more than most smaller teams budget.
  • Buyers who want to try before they commit: Capterra lists no free trial or free version, and AWS contract fees are non-refundable.
  • Teams that want everything reviewed by people: the agents are built to reduce human review, so these teams would not use much of what they offer.
  • Buyers who weigh peer reviews heavily: Capterra users rate Smartling 3.4 out of 5 and its value 2.9.
  • Teams needing a general business agent: Smartling works on translation content only.

Review Settings, Preview Features and Contract Terms

  • Automation settings: the LQA Agent can publish without a reviewer, and its 90% agreement rate leaves room for some differences from human reviewers. Start in supervised mode.
  • Preview features: Style Rules for AI, Instant AI Translation and AI Image Translation launched in preview in May 2026; confirm general availability before relying on them.
  • Non-refundable contracts: the AWS Marketplace listing says fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable except as required by law.
  • Pricing clarity: some Capterra reviewers describe pricing as high and unclear. Ask for per-word rates by translation type in writing.
  • Machine output quality: some reviewers report machine translations that need heavy editing, so test your hardest language pairs.
  • Ownership change: the September 2026 Vitruvian deal may bring roadmap and pricing changes; seek price protection at renewal.

Vitruvian Partners Buys Control From Battery Ventures

Excellent on Security, Built for Larger Budgets

For large brands with heavy translation volume and strict security reviews, Smartling is worth a serious look. It scores 8.3/10 on our scale: excellent on trust and security, strong on autonomy and integrations, with room to grow on pricing value and peer sentiment. The LQA Agent is a real step toward translation that ships without human review, and Smartling reports customers tripling output at 60% lower cost.

The trade-off is entry cost and pricing visibility. A $49,000 annual contract with non-refundable fees means you should negotiate a pilot on your own content first, measure how often the LQA Agent disagrees with your reviewers, and only then decide which content types can run unsupervised.
