Nearly 4,000 law firms and in-house legal teams in 80 countries use Spellbook, which has reviewed more than 10 million contracts from inside Microsoft Word. Its Associate agent goes further than clause suggestions, handling transactional drafting across several documents at once.
The Toronto company launched what it calls the first generative AI tool for lawyers in 2022. Scott Stevenson is its CEO and co-founder, and named customers include Nestlé, eBay and the law firm Kennedys.
How It Works
Spellbook runs as a Word add-in. Its Review feature checks a contract against a team’s playbook and flags risky or missing terms, Draft writes or revises clauses, Ask answers questions about the document and Benchmarks compares terms with market norms. Preference Learning, released in beta in 2025, adapts suggestions to how each lawyer works.
Spellbook Associate is the agentic part. Given a transactional task, it plans the work and carries it out across multiple related documents, such as updating a set of deal agreements so they stay consistent. Lawyers review and accept the changes. Associate is bundled into the same per-seat licence as the Word add-in rather than metered separately.
Pricing
Spellbook does not publish prices. It sells per-seat licences for two segments: law firms, and in-house teams, which also get a playbook build service. Both include the full Spellbook suite, training and online support, with dedicated support for teams of more than ten. A seven-day self-serve trial is open to legal professionals, larger organizations can arrange extended trials through a demo, and academic institutions can ask for free access. The only public dollar figure is a $99 first-month offer for attendees of continuing legal education events.
What to Watch Out For
Without list prices, compare quotes carefully, especially for small teams. Spellbook is built for contract work in Word, so litigators and teams drafting in other editors will get less from it. Any agent that edits several documents at once needs careful review, since a missed change can spread across a deal. In 2026 the company moved from spellbook.legal to spellbook.com, so update bookmarks and allowlists. Firms with strict data policies should also ask how client documents are stored and processed before rolling it out.
