Siemens says its Eigen Engineering Agent can finish automation engineering tasks two to five times faster than manual work. Launched at Hannover Messe in April 2026 and available to the more than 600,000 users of its TIA Portal software, the agent writes and tests PLC code, configures drives and hardware, and keeps iterating until the result meets the benchmarks an engineer sets.
Siemens also sells a family of industrial copilots for products such as Teamcenter and Opcenter. Eigen is its pitch for AI that does the engineering work rather than suggesting it.
How It Works
An engineer describes a task in plain language inside TIA Portal. The agent breaks it into steps, carries them out in the live project, checks intermediate results and reruns steps until they fit the specification. For PLCs it generates and tests SCL and ladder logic, fixes compile errors, runs style-guide checks, writes documentation and explains or comments legacy code. For HMIs it writes JavaScript for WinCC Unified screens and helps migrate older VB scripts. It can also configure drives, motors and encoders, set up devices in bulk from a spreadsheet and lay out PROFINET networks.
In June 2026 Siemens added ECAD integration, which reads electrical design files, flags inconsistencies, adds devices to a project and generates PLC tags. A second feature builds a complete TIA Portal project from a written machine description, following the Siemens Automation Framework. Pilot users included ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT and Prism Systems.
Pricing
Eigen is sold as a subscription through Siemens’ digital marketplace and through direct sales. The product page does not list a price, but it offers a one-month free trial. The two capabilities added in June 2026 were included in the standard subscription at no extra charge.
What to Watch Out For
The agent is tied to TIA Portal, so plants that mix control vendors will get limited value. Siemens’ figures of up to 80% better solution quality and 50% higher efficiency are its own, and results depend on how mature a team’s libraries and standards are. Engineers still need to validate PLC logic, motion, safety-related behavior and networks before anything reaches a machine. Siemens says conversations are stored locally and that customer code and prompts are not used to train models.
Recent News
Siemens launched the Eigen Engineering Agent at Hannover Messe on April 20, 2026, as part of a 1 billion euro industrial AI investment announced in November 2025. At VivaTech in Paris on June 17, it added ECAD integration and standards-based project generation.
