Adobe’s AI Assistant moved from a single Photoshop beta in March 2026 to public beta in five apps by June: Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign and Frame.io. It takes a goal in plain language, such as resizing a campaign visual for every social platform or checking an Illustrator file for missing fonts before print, and runs the intermediate steps itself. It can also be reached from ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
It is best for designers, photographers, editors and marketing teams who already live in Adobe’s apps and want the repetitive parts of production handled. Most apps are still in beta, generation allowances have shifted between releases, and early Photoshop reviews describe it as better suited to hobbyist edits for now, so more stable allowances and pro-level depth are the areas to watch. Free Photoshop web and mobile users get 20 generations to start. We rate it 8.4/10 on our scale. We have not used the assistant; this review is based on Adobe’s announcements and published coverage of each release.
Five Creative Cloud Apps, One Assistant in Beta
- Adobe’s AI Assistant reached public beta in Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign and Frame.io in June 2026, with After Effects in private beta.
- It runs multi-step jobs: platform resizes and layer cleanup in Photoshop, versioned files and prepress checks in Illustrator, bins and first cuts in Premiere.
- Users choose automatic edits or step-by-step guidance and can step in at any point.
- Free Photoshop web and mobile users get 20 generations; paid subscribers had unlimited assistant generations through April 9, 2026.
- Against Canva AI and Adobe Express, it is the pick for professional production files; for quick social graphics, those tools are simpler.

Two points matter for a buyer. First, the assistant is moving fast: three releases in about three months, each adding apps and jobs. That is good for capability, and teams writing a stable process around it should expect names, limits and features to keep changing for a while.
Second, Adobe is spreading the agent beyond its own apps. Access from ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot means a marketer could start a creative job from a chat tool the team already uses. The broad model menu gives choice, but it also means teams need a rule on which models are acceptable for commercial work.
Describe the Result and Let the Assistant Plan the Steps
The assistant appears as an icon or panel in each supported app. You describe the outcome, and it plans and runs the steps. Adobe’s own framing is that the user describes the result, the assistant handles the intermediate work and the human keeps control of every decision.
In Photoshop
Requests cover removing distractions or unwanted people, changing backgrounds, refining lighting and portraits, adjusting color and cropping for a specific use. You choose whether it applies the edits automatically or gives a step-by-step guide, which is useful for learning how an effect is built. On mobile you can speak the request. AI Markup on the web lets you draw on part of the image and prompt a change, such as adding flowers to a marked area. The June release added swapping backgrounds, resizing visuals for each platform and reorganizing layers across a composition.
In Illustrator and InDesign
Illustrator jobs include producing versioned files from a spreadsheet, reorganizing layers and running prepress checks for color-mode errors and missing fonts. In InDesign the assistant applies a style taken from a PDF or template, updates text and styles and runs checks before printing. These are the tasks most likely to save production designers real time, because they are repetitive and rule-based.
In Premiere and Frame.io
For video, the assistant sorts footage into bins, batch-renames clips, flags interview questions and assembles a first cut. In Frame.io it organizes shoot media, tracks feedback across versions and generates B-roll.
Firefly Skills and Third-Party Access
The Firefly web app adds skills that start multi-step processes from one command: a brand kit with logo, identity and palette from a style description; product videos from photos; Quick Cut rough edits from dialogue or narration; and storyboards that turn into video. The assistant is also available inside ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot, with Gemini and Slack announced through an Adobe for creativity connector.
Joining the Beta in Photoshop Web and the Desktop Apps
There is no separate install. In Photoshop on the web or mobile, users who have not yet joined the beta program join it first, then open the assistant from its icon. In the desktop apps covered by the June release, the assistant arrives as part of the public beta of each app, so a team can trial it on one app, such as Illustrator for prepress checks, before turning it on elsewhere. Third-party access through ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot runs inside those chat tools. A sensible rollout starts with a single repetitive job, measures the time saved and checks how many generations it uses, then expands.
Creative Direction and Final Approval Remain With You
People still set the creative direction, approve each result and check output from generative models. Prepress checks flag problems, but a designer decides how to fix them. First cuts in Premiere are a starting point for an editor, not a finished edit.
Bundled in Creative Cloud and Billed Through Credits
Adobe does not sell the assistant as a separate product. Access comes through Photoshop and other Creative Cloud apps, and generative edits draw on Adobe’s allowances. These are the published figures.
| Plan | Price | Billing | What’s Included | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photoshop web and mobile (free) | Free | None | AI Assistant in public beta | 20 free generations to start |
| Paid Photoshop subscription | Plan price | Monthly or annual | AI Assistant on web and mobile | Unlimited assistant generations through April 9, 2026; plan generative credit allowance applies |
| Creative Cloud Pro | $69.99 a month list (reported; promotions vary) | Monthly or annual | Creative Cloud apps where the assistant runs in beta | Generative credit allowance by plan |
| Firefly web app | Firefly plans | Monthly or annual | Firefly skills and AI Assistant | Firefly customers had unlimited generations at the March 2026 announcement |
From a Free Phone Trial to a Heavy Generative Workload
Because Adobe bundles the assistant, the real cost depends on the plan you already hold and how much generative work the assistant triggers. These scenarios use the published figures; the volumes are our own illustrative assumptions.
- A hobbyist trying it on a phone: free Photoshop mobile covers 20 generations. Ten edited photos with two generative steps each uses the full allowance at no cost.
- A freelance designer on Creative Cloud Pro: at the reported $69.99 list price, a year costs $839.88 before discounts. Rule-based jobs such as resizes, layer cleanup and prepress checks are the best value, since they save time without leaning on generative models.
- A five-person in-house team: five Creative Cloud Pro seats at the reported list price come to $349.95 a month, or $4,199.40 a year. Teams already paying this get the assistant on top; teams not on Adobe should compare against Canva or Figma first.
The variable cost is generative usage. Adobe’s free allowance is small, its launch promotion has ended and reviewers note that credit rules keep changing. Track which assistant actions consume generations before rolling it out widely.
Adobe Firefly AI Assistant Compared With Adobe Express AI Assistant, Canva AI, Figma Design Agent and Lovart
Creative agents divide into tools inside professional apps and tools that generate marketing assets from scratch. Adobe’s assistant is the first kind; Canva AI and Lovart lean toward the second.
| Agent | Starting Price | Free Plan | Main Strength | Main Trade-Off | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Firefly AI Assistant | Free in Photoshop web and mobile (20 generations) | Limited | Multi-step jobs inside Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere | Beta status and changing allowances | Creative teams already on Adobe |
| Adobe Express AI Assistant | Free (limited); Premium $9.99 a month | Limited | Quick on-brand social posts and flyers | Less control than full Creative Cloud apps | Creators and small businesses |
| Canva AI | Free; Pro $18 a month | Yes | Templates and easy editor | Not built for print production or video editing at pro depth | Marketing teams and non-designers |
| Figma Design Agent | $16 a month per full seat (reported) | No | Product and UI design inside Figma | Focused on interface design | Product and UX teams |
| Lovart | Free; paid from about $19 a month (reported) | Limited | Design agent that builds whole brand projects | Credit-based pricing | Marketers and freelance designers |
Pick Adobe’s assistant if your team already produces print, photo and video work in Creative Cloud and wants the dull steps handled where the files live. Adobe Express or Canva AI are faster for social graphics made by non-designers. Figma Design Agent belongs in interface design, and Lovart suits marketers who want an agent to generate a brand system from a brief. Production Designers, Campaign Teams and Video Editors
- Production designers: versioned files from a spreadsheet, prepress checks and InDesign style updates are repetitive work the assistant now handles.
- Social and campaign teams on Adobe: resizing visuals for each platform and adapting one image for several channels come from a single request.
- Video editors: bin sorting, clip renaming and first-cut assembly in Premiere cut setup time on interview-heavy projects.
- Photographers learning new techniques: the step-by-step mode shows how an edit is built rather than only applying it.
Teams Planning Around Fixed AI Costs or Stable Releases
- Teams that need fixed, predictable AI costs: Adobe’s allowances and promotions have changed several times in 2026.
- Non-designers who want fast social posts: Canva AI or Adobe Express is simpler and cheaper.
- Organizations that keep beta software out of production: most of the assistant is still in public or private beta.
- Teams outside the Adobe ecosystem: the value comes from working inside Adobe files and apps.
Beta Changes, Credit Use and Model Provenance
- Beta behavior: features and limits are still moving. Test on copies of important files.
- Credit consumption: reviewers note that many demo edits rely on generative AI, which draws on credits. Rule-based tasks are cheaper ways to get value.
- Model provenance: Firefly offers Adobe’s commercially safe models next to third-party models. Set a policy on which ones client and commercial work may use.
- Hobbyist tilt in Photoshop: early coverage judged the Photoshop version aimed at hobbyists. Professional retouchers may find the June layer and resize jobs more useful than the photo fixes.
- Ecosystem fit: the more of your process runs through Adobe’s agent, the more planning a later tool change would take.
Photoshop’s March Beta to the April Firefly Agent
- March 10, 2026: Adobe released AI Assistant in Photoshop in public beta on web and mobile, and PetaPixel reported the same release reaching Express and Acrobat.
- April 15, 2026: Adobe unveiled the Firefly AI Assistant as a single agent for work across Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Lightroom.
- June 18, 2026: the assistant expanded to public beta in five apps and became available in ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Turn It On for Resizes and Prepress Checks First
For teams already paying for Creative Cloud, the assistant is worth turning on now, mainly for the rule-based jobs: platform resizes, layer cleanup, versioned files and prepress checks. Those save time with little creative exposure and without leaning on generative credits. The photo fixes in Photoshop are pleasant and matter less to professionals.
It scores 8.4/10 on our scale. Integration across Adobe apps and outside chat tools is its strength; leaving beta, settling allowances and gathering public ratings would lift the score. Teams not already on Adobe may find Canva AI or Lovart a simpler and less costly starting point.
